Pertains to Fox River Trail, Yorkville | |
YORKVILLE -- The city plans to purchase a piece of riverfront property that someday will include benches, walking trails and potentially a bike trail. The property of longtime Yorkville resident Ron Clark, at the southeast corner of Route 47 and Main Street, is being sold to the city for $550,000, according to the real estate agreement. The deal will likely close by the first of the year, Alderman Robyn Sutcliff said Wednesday. Family members of Clark approached Sutcliff, whose ward includes Clark's property, and Mayor Valerie Burd in August about the city acquiring the 4.34 acres of land along the Fox River. The Clark name has been known in Yorkville for four generations, and the family's wish is to use his property as a natural green space, Sutcliff said. The city is agreeing to conserve the land, and not redevelop it for commercial use. "The vision for this administration is conservation of green space on the river," Sutcliff said. The city will likely name the green space Hopkins Park, in honor of Clark's grandfather. Five aldermen supported the purchase, while Alderman Rose Spears voted against it. Two alderman, Arden "Joe" Plocher and Joe Besco, were absent. Alderman Marty Munns favored the deal because it was a "unique property," but said he would not support frequent spending of taxpayer money on real estate purchases. "I'm not a big fan of spending a lot of taxpayer money, but it was a prudent thing to do," he said. The city will pay its first installment of $100,000 to the Clark family within 30 days. |
